Marking of Toy, Look-Alike, and Imitation Firearms

The Federal Energy Management Improvement Act Update transferred the authority for regulating the marking of toy, look-alike, and imitation firearms from the Department of Commerce to the CPSC. The Commission issued a direct final rule to adopt the Department of Commerce’s 1989 rule (15 CFR part 272) for the marking of toy, look-alike, and imitation firearms with only non-substantive conforming changes (88 FR 30226). The CPSC rule (16 CFR part 1272) will be effective June 26, 2023. For additional information, please see CPSC’s toy, look-alike, and imitation firearms business guidance page. Additionally, CPSC’s Office of Compliance and Field Operations has exercised temporary enforcement discretion with respect to the issuance of general certificates of conformity (GCC). Please see the GCC Enforcement Discretion Letter for more information. To access this and any other CPSC business guidance page, please check out CPSC’s Business Guidance Library.
